To be fair, physical health is usually what people are referring to when this term is used, but there are more factors that make up our health than just the physical aspect. The emotional intelligence, or EQ, that is present within every individual can be explained in basic terms as a person’s ability to process and react to various emotions, as well as how these emotions are managed – whether they are seemingly good or bad emotions. It can be argued that it is just as important to pay close attention to the EQ and to maintain it just as much as any other facet of your life, because it can play a huge role in the overall state of the mental health and deteriorate it if not supported well. Work on Listening & Understanding

When we are active listeners and aim to understand others on a deeper level, we are able to promote better communication all-around and to nurture important relationships. We are often so caught up in every little detail within our lives and easily succumb to whatever emotion arises that we forget to really listen and understand what someone else may be going through. Working on actively listening and really understanding what another person is expressing to you is a huge game-changer when it comes to developing the emotional health.

So many of us make the choice to put others before ourselves whenever the chance is given without a second thought. No matter who you are, doing so will inevitably leave you feeling mentally and emotionally drained. Get into the habit of doing something solely for yourself each day, no matter how small that thing is. Intentionally showing up for yourself in this manner will allow you to show up in the full extent you desire to for others, and your state of emotional health will be so much more solidified.

Practice Mindfulness

Maintaining mindfulness, especially during times with so much chaos, is not always the easiest thing to do. Being mindful is a huge factor of emotional intelligence since it takes a high degree of not only self-awareness, but social awareness, too. Meditating is a great way to tap into the present moment and creating a routine of practicing this daily will allow you to tap into this state of present more easily whenever it is necessary. Understanding why you may be feeling certain emotions is a key factor when it comes to EQ and engaging in being mindful is one of the best ways to do so.

Attend Therapy

One of the best ways to keep your emotional health strong and in balance is to take the step into attending therapy. Anyone and everyone can benefit from attending therapy at some point in their lives, and it is especially useful in developing the EQ and maintaining a good emotional balance. Therapy is also fantastic with helping to establish better communication skills, which is a major element for improving the EQ. Meeting with a mental health professional is arguably the best way to gain a clearer understanding of why you feel and react certain ways and how you can better empathize with others in your life if you struggle with doing so.

It is never too late to work on strengthening the EQ and to create a more ideal state of emotional health. Taking care of yourself in this way is just as important as eating well, getting exercise, and ensuring you get enough sleep at night. Your overall sense of self can improve, and your relationships will be able to flourish.

Maintaining the emotional health is just one extremely important way to help you progress in other various areas within life. Research has shown that a high degree of EQ correlates to having more success in your professional life, which results in an increased sense of fulfillment.
